Surrender: What are We Willing to Lose? challenges visitors to examine their choices, literally and symbolically raising the white flag of surrender to climate change. In our large-scale public installation, "surrender" has a dual meaning. Participants are encouraged to contemplate actions they take everyday that signal they have surrendered the future to climate change as well as pinpoint what they value, or what they refuse to surrender. Participants are additionally invited to add flags that offer a new meaning of surrender: “What am I willing to surrender to fight climate change?”
To add a performative layer of accountability, flag-wavers are asked to announce what they refuse and/or are willing to surrender through a giant megaphone! More than 5,000 people participated.
